Samling is a mixed-use timber building in the centre of Sand, bringing together a public library, a bank and residential apartments under one roof.
Designed by Helen & Hard following their competition-winning proposal, the project was recognised for the clarity of its architectural concept and the way three distinct functions are organised around the public library. Double-height spaces and exposed timber portal frames make the structural system a defining feature of the interior architecture, while the all-timber structural solution contributes to a substantial reduction in embodied carbon.
Degree of Freedom was responsible for the structural engineering during the preliminary and detailed design phases. Our scope also included technical support during construction.
