Kunstsilo is a contemporary art museum in Kristiansand, created through the transformation of two groups of grain silos dating from the 1930s to house the Tangen Collection.
Developed from the winning proposal in the international architectural competition by Mestres Wåge, Mendoza Partida and BAX Studio, the project transforms one of the city’s most iconic industrial structures into more than 8,500 m² of exhibition and public space. The intervention preserves the architectural identity of the original silos while introducing generous new spaces, turning a former industrial facility into a major cultural landmark.
The rehabilitation presented significant structural challenges, particularly the removal of much of the lower half of the silos to create a large central space. The project required innovative construction solutions, complex staged non-linear FEM analyses and careful planning of the demolition and construction sequence to ensure the stability of the existing structure throughout the works.
Degree of Freedom delivered the structural engineering during the preliminary and detailed design phases in collaboration with Rambøll. Our scope also included the development of the demolition and erection sequence, together with technical support during construction.
