The refurbishment of Cinemateket transformed a former 1940s concrete warehouse in central Oslo into a cinema and cultural venue.
The project retained the building’s original industrial character while introducing a new façade and main entrance, a double-height public foyer, refurbished office space for the Norwegian Film Institute and a series of structural interventions to accommodate the revised architectural layout. Reuse of existing materials and measures to reduce carbon emissions were key priorities throughout the project, resulting in a more open, accessible and sustainable building.
Degree of Freedom carried out the structural assessment of the existing building, designed the required strengthening works and integrated the new structural elements needed to support the new building layout.
