Kunstsilo wins First Place at the 2026 ACI Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards

An incredible recognition for Kunstsilo and everyone involved in bringing this ambitious transformation to life!

The transformation of the historic grain silos in Kristiansand, Norway, has received First Place in the Repair and Restoration category at the international awards organised by the American Concrete Institute, often referred to as the “Oscars of the Concrete Industry.”

We carried out the structural calculations and BIM modelling for this transformation, from preliminary design through detailed design and technical assistance during construction, including the detailed planning of construction stages for the unconventional parts of the structure on site.

Originally built in the 1930s, the grain silos were transformed into a contemporary art museum. The project involved a radical structural intervention, redefining the building’s original behaviour to create new open exhibition spaces while preserving its industrial identity.

A special mention to Fran Blasco from Degree of Freedom and Simon Hartveit from Backe, who had the honour of collecting the award in Atlanta on behalf of the project team!

We’re proud to have contributed to this project alongside such a dedicated team. Congratulations to everyone involved: Degree of Freedom | Ramboll | Stærk & Co AS | Backe | Mestres Wåge Architects | Mendoza Partida | Bax Studio.
