Bybrua is the urban bridge connecting Strømsø and Bragernes, completing Drammen’s main east–west axis.
The bridge has a total length of 262 metres and spans both the Drammenselva River and Drammen railway station, providing a key link for public transport, pedestrians and cyclists. Over the river, the structure comprises three spans of 46, 86 and 42 metres, while five shorter spans cross the railway station. The 19-metre-wide deck accommodates two lanes for buses and taxis, together with generous pedestrian and cycle routes on either side. Steel arches and girders support a composite steel-concrete deck founded on steel piles driven to bedrock, located at depths of up to 80 metres. On the Bragernes side, a new quay extends the public realm on both sides of the bridge, strengthening the connection between the city and the waterfront.
Degree of Freedom was responsible for the design of the river crossing, including the detailed design of the foundations, piers and superstructure. The bridge crossing the railway station was developed under the supervision of Bane NOR. Our scope also included design management, project leadership and structural engineering throughout all phases of the project, including construction support.
