Herøysund Bridge is a road bridge connecting the islands of Sør-Herøy and Nord-Herøy in Nordland County, Norway.
The bridge forms part of County Road 828 and replaces the structure built in 1966, which had reached the end of its service life due to extensive deterioration. The project also included the upgrading of the county road through Silvalen and Herøyholmen. The final design was selected from three concepts developed during the early design phase. By eliminating the need for piers within the navigation channel, it also made it possible to prefabricate almost the entire superstructure off site. The bridge is a composite steel-concrete rigid-frame structure with a 75-metre central arch span and two 30-metre side spans, giving a total length of 135 metres. The 200-tonne steel superstructure was transported by barge and lifted into place in a single operation.
Degree of Freedom was responsible for the bridge design and structural engineering throughout all phases of the project. Our scope also included project management, design management, BIM coordination and technical support during construction. The project was delivered entirely using BIM, without the use of traditional drawings.
