Christian Quart Bridge is a pedestrian and cycle bridge spanning the Otra River in Kristiansand.
Designed by Degree of Freedom for the Municipality of Kristiansand, the bridge follows a gentle horizontal curve that preserves three mature maple trees while continuing the existing pedestrian route towards the residential neighbourhood on the eastern riverbank. The bridge profile was carefully optimised to accommodate the 4.5-metre level difference between the abutments, maintain a maximum gradient of 5% for cyclists and provide the required navigational clearance. The 178-metre-long structure consists of a slender steel box girder supported by reinforced concrete piers with a variable cross-section, combining visual lightness with structural efficiency. Stainless steel railings with perforated panels, integrated lighting and landscaped approaches, including seating areas connected to the park and the surrounding path network, reinforce the bridge’s integration into its setting.
Degree of Freedom was responsible for the bridge design and structural engineering throughout all phases of the project. Our scope also included technical support during fabrication and construction, as well as inspection of the steel structure.
