Eskilstuna Footbridge connects the city centre with the Munktellstaden district and forms part of the regeneration of the city’s former industrial area.
Commissioned by the Municipality of Eskilstuna, the project is part of the transformation of the former industrial site into a new urban district comprising a public swimming pool, sports and cultural facilities, housing and public spaces. Beyond improving the pedestrian connection between the two riverbanks, the bridge was conceived as an integrated architectural intervention that enhances the quality of the waterfront. Three alternative concepts were developed during the concept design phase, with the selected proposal featuring a lightweight structure with inclined arches beneath the deck. The bridge comprises three spans: a 32-metre main span and two 16.5-metre approach spans that follow the same structural geometry, resulting in a slender and well-balanced structure.
Degree of Freedom collaborated with WSP Sweden during the preliminary design phase and was responsible for both the architectural and structural concept design. WSP Sweden subsequently carried out the detailed design and construction supervision.
