Designed in collaboration with NUNO Arkitektur, the bridge creates a new public space while allowing larger vessels to navigate through the harbour.
Norrtälje Bridge was developed as the winning proposal in an architectural competition for a new movable pedestrian bridge connecting the north and south quays in Norrtälje, Sweden.
The design responds to the contrasting character of its surroundings, linking the historic Sosietetsparken with the contemporary waterfront through a slender structure that combines structural efficiency with a refined architectural expression. The bridge also provides generous space for pedestrians and cyclists, while creating a place to stop and enjoy views of the harbour and the outer archipelago.
Curved in plan, the bridge comprises four spans of approximately 13, 23.5, 19 and 18.5 metres. The two end spans are fixed, while the two central spans rotate about a central support to create a navigation channel. The opening mechanism was conceived as a simple and efficient solution, both structurally and operationally.
The steel deck is formed by box girders supporting steel cantilever ribs, longitudinal beams and a solid timber deck. Its depth is limited to just 500 mm to satisfy both the required navigation clearance and accessibility requirements, resulting in a lightweight, slender and torsionally efficient structure.
Degree of Freedom was responsible for the structural engineering during the architectural competition.
