Boomerang Bridge provides a pedestrian connection between a residential area of Oslo and the Østmarka forest.
Designed by Degree of Freedom in collaboration with Saaha and Asplan Viak for the City of Oslo, the bridge forms part of the pedestrian and cycle route crossing Ytre Ringvei. The 80-metre-long structure consists of a continuous weathering steel box girder with four spans, the longest measuring 22 metres. Its asymmetric cross-section has been optimised to improve structural performance, while the boomerang-shaped alignment follows the approach paths, preserving the existing trees and integrating seamlessly into the surrounding landscape.
Degree of Freedom was responsible for the bridge design and structural engineering throughout all phases of the project. Our scope also included technical support during fabrication and construction, as well as inspection of the steel structure. The project received the Norwegian Steel Construction Award in 2017 and was shortlisted for the World Architecture News Best Bridge Award (2017), the Oslo City Architecture Award (2018) and the European Steel Bridge Award (2019).
