Färjestad Bridge creates a new pedestrian and cycle connection across the Klarälven River in Karlstad, Sweden, linking the districts of Råtorp and Färjestad.
Nearly 290 metres long, the bridge combines a lightweight steel structure with a gently curved alignment and varying deck widths to create a dynamic crossing that responds to its riverside setting.
Inspired by the structure of insect wings, the design emphasises lightness, transparency and a close connection to the surrounding landscape. Galvanised steel grating, aluminium-painted steel and corten steel details reinforce the bridge’s light and elegant expression.
Developed from the winning proposal in an architectural and engineering competition, the project demonstrates how structural engineering and architectural design can be combined to create elegant and sustainable urban infrastructure.
Degree of Freedom contributed with the development of the bridge’s steel structure. The team worked in close collaboration with the architects to achieve an elegant, lightweight solution that supports the bridge’s architectural vision of transparency and minimal environmental impact. Key contributions included structural design ensuring aesthetic finesse and constructability.
