The refurbishment of Karl Johans gate 17 adapts a building dating from 1892 in central Oslo to provide modern office accommodation with retail space at ground level.

The scheme combines careful conservation of the existing structure with significant architectural interventions, including the relocation of the staircases and lift cores, the reconstruction of the roof and upper street façade, and targeted structural strengthening to support the new layout. The existing structure combines load-bearing masonry walls, steel columns and beams, concrete floor slabs, and an original timber floor, which has been retained as part of the redevelopment.

Degree of Freedom is responsible for the structural assessment of the existing building, the design of the strengthening works, and the integration of the new structural elements required for the refurbishment.
